The community of Walkerton is located in the Municipality of Brockton, southwest of Owen Sound. The town was named after its first settler, Joseph Walker, who first came to the area in 1850. He soon built a saw and grist mill, and would eventually become Walkerton’s first mayor. Though the town lost most of its downtown buildings in a fire in 1877, the community was quick to rebuild, constructing beautiful buildings that still stand today and act as a reminder of Walkerton’s historic past.
Walkerton is a great place for families to enjoy outdoor recreational activities all year around. The area is home to many walking trails, the Saugeen canoe route, great finishing spots, and recreational facilities such as the Walkerton Community Centre. There are also many opportunities for great shopping and dining in the downtown core, with most shops, cafes and restaurants housed in beautiful historic buildings.
